What Touring Model Homes Can Teach You

There is something exciting about walking through a brand-new model home. Beautiful furniture, thoughtful lighting, carefully selected finishes, and perfectly coordinated colors make it easy to picture yourself living there. But as a color consultant and designer, I see something more.

Every model home is a learning opportunity.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet with a sales coordinator and one of my clients at a new home community. We walked through the model together to evaluate the standard paint color being offered with the home and determine whether it would support the overall vision my client had for their new space.

What I love most about these appointments is that they go far beyond choosing paint.

Looking at a Home Through a Designer's Eyes

When I tour a model home, I'm constantly asking questions.

• Which upgrades create the biggest visual impact?

• Which features add long-term value?

• Which standard selections are actually great as-is?

• Where is the builder spending money that homeowners may never notice?

• What can be upgraded later for less money?

These are conversations that can save homeowners thousands of dollars while still creating a beautiful, customized home.

Sometimes the smartest decision isn't selecting every available upgrade. It's knowing which ones are worth investing in now and which ones can be completed later for a fraction of the cost.

Paint Is One of the Most Powerful Design Decisions

During this visit, we reviewed the builder's standard paint selection. While it was a beautiful color, it leaned much cooler than my client's style and the finishes they had already selected.

Rather than settling for a color that didn't feel right, we stayed within the builder's available Sherwin-Williams color selections and found a warmer option that better complemented the overall design direction.

The result?

A home that will feel more intentional from the day my client moves in—without changing the entire design plan.

Paint may seem like a small decision, but it affects every room, every finish, and every piece of furniture you bring into your home.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

One of my favorite parts of working with clients during the building process is helping them identify simple ways to elevate the standard selections.

Sometimes it's choosing a better wall color.

Sometimes it's coordinating flooring, cabinetry, countertops, and paint so everything works together instead of competing for attention.

Photos online are helpful, but they can never replace seeing finishes in real life.
