When I create an accent wall, I don’t always reach for paint first—sometimes the art itself becomes the accent. A great piece of artwork can anchor a room, set the tone, and bring in color and personality in a way nothing else can. But to really let that artwork shine, you need more than just a beautiful piece—you need the right placement, lighting, and backdrop to pull the whole look together. Here’s how I approach it when I’m styling art as the star of the wall.

Finding the Perfect Height for Your Art

One of the questions I get asked all the time is, “How high should I hang this?” And honestly, the height can completely change the way a piece feels in your space. My go-to rule? I almost always aim to have the center of the artwork at eye level—usually somewhere around 57–60 inches from the floor.

It’s that sweet spot where you’re not looking way up or bending down to admire it. Just a natural, comfortable view that lets the colors and details really shine.

Lighting: Setting the Mood

Lighting is like magic for artwork. I love using it to create a moment around a piece—whether that’s soft ambient lighting or a focused spotlight that makes your favorite painting feel extra special.

If you’re more into general lighting, keep it gentle so it doesn’t cast weird shadows. But if you want the artwork to really pop, track lights or adjustable sconces are amazing because you can point them exactly where the drama should be.

A little lighting love can turn a regular corner into a mini gallery.

Choosing the Right Wall Color

You know I can’t talk about artwork without mentioning wall color! The wall behind your art is basically its stage.

Neutrals are always a safe bet—they let your art do all the talking. But sometimes a color inside the artwork just begs to be repeated on the walls, and when that happens, I’m all for it. Pulling a hue from the piece can tie the whole room together and make the artwork feel even more intentional.

Bring It All Together

Accenting your artwork isn’t about following strict rules—it’s about creating a space that lets your pieces shine. A good height, thoughtful lighting, and the right wall color can completely transform the way you experience your art.

Play with it, trust your eye, and have fun turning your home into your own personal gallery.
